What does this mean? Proposition 65 is a “right to know” law passed by voters, known officially as the California Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986. This law requires manufacturers and retailers of products to notify California residents if any Prop 65-listed chemicals are present in products or the workplace environment. There are more than 900 chemicals listed, some as well known as alcoholic beverages, oral contraceptives, or tobacco and marijuana smoke. Many are synthetic and others occur naturally, such as aloe vera, leather dust and wood dust. Prop 65 warnings appear in California on products ranging from coffee to balsamic vinegar to hotel furniture. “The fact that a product bears a Prop 65 warning label does not mean by itself that the product is unsafe.” [CA Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment, April 2012]
