CHOOSING THE PERFECT FURNITURE FRAME

The right fabric on the right frame is like a great marriage — each enhances the other.
Here are some things to consider to be sure that you and your custom furniture will live happily ever after.

Calico - Perfect Furniture Frames

Begin with the room and listen to what the room is telling you it needs.

Consider the scale, the formality, the architectural detail, the art or antiques, carpets or rugs and the other furnishings. They'll suggest a direction. Large, over-scaled furniture that won't be lost in a great room? Upholstered furniture with an exposed wood frame to echo antiques or cabinetry? A roomy sectional for the family room that can accommodate parents, kids and pets? Sophisticated seating to flank an elegant fireplace? We have them all.

Look for harmony.

Sofas and chairs should relate in their basic style, curves and general proportions, advises interior designer and author Alexandra Stoddard. "Look at the arms of a sofa for clues to how the arms of a chair should look. If you like large-scaled furniture, use fewer and well-proportioned pieces, or your room will look crowded," she states in her book, Open Your Eyes.

On the other hand, eclectic is in!

Camelback sofas don't have to live with wing chairs. Track-arm chairs don't need to marry only ultra-modern sofas. Just be sure your furniture pieces will complement one another, paying special attention to arm heights and back heights where furniture is next to one another.

Don't forget family and friends.

Does your spouse like to stretch out on the sofa for a nap? Be sure it's long enough for that purpose. Do you like to put your feet up when reading or watching television? Find an ottoman to go with that new chair. Do you need a sleeper sofa for visiting relatives? How do you like to entertain? Would a large cocktail ottoman provide additional seating for party guests? Do you want a cozy corner for reading to children? Factor in the human element to help determine what will work best for your furniture needs.

Is it the right scale? Will it fit?

Tape sheets of newspaper together to create the size of the piece you're considering and lay it out on the floor. Walk around it. Is there enough clearance around it? Do the width and depth seem right?

Put two or three dining chairs on top of the newspaper to help you visualize the volume of the piece in the room. Will it fit through the door — or up the stairs? If the dimensions aren't right for your room, we'll find a size that will work. Most of our sofas are also available in smaller scale demi-sizes. Note: a small room does not require petite furniture (which may emphasize its small scale), but you do want to be sure everything will fit comfortably.
