THE POWER OF COLOR TO SET THE MOOD
Color expert Kate Smith of Sensational Color recently conducted seminars for customers at the newly renovated Calico Corners - Calico Home stores in Great Falls and Fairfax, Virginia. Kate illustrated her program with a lot of exciting new fabrics to show how color can change a room and affect your mood. Here are some of her comments on the power of color and pattern.

TRANQUIL, CALMING, RESTFUL
Blue is the default color for creating peaceful, calming environments. Blue can lower blood pressure, making us feel more relaxed — the reason that soft blues and blue-greens are often used in spa interiors. Blue can also create the perception that a room is about 10 to 12 degrees cooler than it is. If not partial to blue, you can create a similar feeling by using analogous colors — blue, green, lavender — with white. These colors have similar values — and the low contrast creates a tranquil setting. Add some warm tones in woods or accent colors, because the eye seeks balance between warm and cool colors.

NURTURING, CARING, ENCOURAGING
Create a tranquil color scheme by adding soft corals or pinks to balance and warm up calming cool colors.

All these colors appear together in the print at the top — then reappear in these fabrics. By varying the tints, tones and shades, you can create subtle contrasts that are easy to live with.

This group of fabrics, with linen print, silk stripe and plaid, plus velvet and matelassé textures (in center of photo) would create a luxurious bedroom — for yourself or for your guests.

TRADITIONAL, CLASSIC, ESTABLISHED
Classic colors have stood the test of time  — such as variations of chocolate and aqua (or "Choc-qua" as Kate calls it) that have been so prevalent in home furnishings in past years. Spice market reds and Flemish golds are another variation on this traditional theme.

How can you add new life to a classic color scheme? Add an unexpected element, such as the print in the center (shown below) with its coral reds — then pull that color out in accent pillows and other accessories. Or add the playful note of a bird jacquard or the drama of an animal skin design. "Animal patterns can hover between being trendy and tacky," says Kate, "but used sparingly, they can be a great way to update a traditional interior."

CONTEMPLATIVE, THOUGHTFUL, SPIRITUAL A contemplative color scheme is very much about neutrals — but neutrals can be shades of yellow gold or platinum gray or celadon — not just a variation of beige or taupe. Using a variety of textures will bring visual interest to a neutral color scheme. These fabrics range from a dupioni silk to a jacquard to a silky cabled stripe to a tweedy solid.

When the fabric textures in a room are not all formal — or not all informal — that room will be more compelling over time. The furnishings will engage your eye and you won't tire of the room as quickly.

DYNAMIC, ENERGETIC, ADVENTUROUS
Unusual color combos — such as lemony greens and plums — are high contrast expressions of a dynamic color personality. The graphic ikat pattern at the bottom is tempered by a smaller scale floral print. Both are complemented by the textured solids and the waffled velvet at the top.

Warm, happy orange is an active color that you either love or hate, notes Kate. Here, a dynamic paisley print on a tangerine ground works well with a damask in this untraditional color — both grounded by the gold textured chenille. The leopard spot jacquard in crimson and coral varies the scale and adds some animal energy to this scheme.

PLAYFUL, WHIMSICAL, IMAGINATIVE A playful palette of spirited colors is revved up by velvet dots and a graphic floral — and toned down by linear stripes and a faux velvet.

Whimsical scenes aren't just about bright colors — but also use patterns such as dots, wide stripes and oversized florals together. The fun is in the mix!
