Furniture Reupholstery
____________________________________________________________________________________________
A good furniture upholsterer can give furniture new form, take out dated details, raise the skirt & give you back a piece that’s better than new.  Springs are replaced & retied.  Fillings & foams are renewed.  The frame is reinforced if needed.  The finish is touched up.  In short, you’ll have the equivalent of a new piece of furniture when the upholsterer is finished.  That’s why the cost of reupholstery is often close to the price of a new piece.

When is it Worth Reupholstering?

  When you love it.
Your furniture has a history that can’t be bought--& it has earned a place in your heart & your home.  Perhaps the sofa was the first piece of furniture you bought in your marriage.  Or that wing chair belonged to your grandfather.  If a piece has sentimental value, it’s worth recovering.  Whatever you choose--to buy new furniture or to reupholster--the cost of the fabric will be the same.

When it has a good frame.
If your furniture has a sturdy hardwood frame, it’s worth reupholstering--even if it’s decades old.  (Just think of expensive antiques that are treasured & reupholstered--some for dozens of times).  If your upholstered furniture was inexpensive when first purchased, it may not be worth recovering.

When it can be updated to your taste.

Good upholsterers can update a piece of furniture--a piece that is too hard-edged can be plumped & softened.  They can create a longer skirt or remove tufting or channeling, if desired.  Since personal preferences are involved in restyling furniture, consult with the upholsterer &, if possible, look at the piece before the final fabric is applied.

When it will cost less than purchasing a new piece of furniture.

Furniture reupholstery isn’t cheap—but it may be less costly than buying new furniture.  The fabric cost will be about the same, regardless.
